Emerging as an independent stylist after eight years as the chief assistant to legendary international stylist Eugene Souleiman. Travis Balcke knows how to think on his feet and execute miracles on an impossible timeline. Regularly styling the collections in Paris, London, New York and Milan fashion weeks, Balcke is an example of pressure creating diamonds. “The start of the shows is a mad rush of momentum and I’ve had to master creating ninety styles in three hours. You’ve got to make it happen and make it happen in a matter of minutes. The critical difference with hair is there is no post production, it has to be perfect in the moment. The show experience created a depth of confidence in the level of diversity I can create in styling.”
While the challenge and theatricality of ultra avant garde shoots and theatrical shows, Balcke is also very partial to celebrity hair styling: “It’s my chance to tell a story, create a fantasy and build a character.” Working with Bjork, Lady GaGa, Julianne Moore and Gwyneth Paltrow, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett as well as the distinction of being voted a Wella colourist of the year has established his international reputation.
Wed to his formidable experience is passion: “I believe that the key to modern hair is the right hair on the right person. When you own your look, that’s when it comes to life. The vital image for me is the look that doesn’t date: a beautiful image will transcend trends and it’s what I am always trying to create, a form of glamour that can be eternal.”
